8 Common Misconceptions About EVs
Electric vehicles (EVs) are reshaping transportation, and Modo is leading the charge with over 100 EVs in our fleet. However, many myths persist that may hinder their adoption. We aim to dispel these misconceptions, providing clarity and confidence for those considering an EV from Modo. Let’s clear the air, shall we?
1. Limited Range
Worried about running out of juice? Modern EVs often cover 320-450 km on a single charge, with continuous improvements extending ranges even further like regenerative braking. When you brake, the car's electric motor works in reverse, slowing down the wheels without using friction. As the motor slows the car, it acts like a generator, converting its kinetic energy back into electrical energy. This electrical energy is then sent back to the car's battery for storage and later use, making the vehicle more efficient.
2. Charging Takes Too Long
Think charging will take forever? Level 3 chargers can add significant range in about 30 minutes. Modo’s Level 3 charging is capped at one hour per session for maximum efficiency. Grab a coffee, stretch your legs, and you’re good to go!
3. Limited Charging Infrastructure
Wondering where to plug in? Charging stations are increasing rapidly. Use apps like PlugShare or ChargePoint to locate nearby stations easily. There are also various levels of chargers. Level 3 chargers are typically larger and charge per minute, while Level 2 chargers are smaller and charge per hour. Look for signage and use resources like charging station maps for guidance.
4. Expensive to Own and Operate
It is true that EVs are currently more expensive to buy than gasoline-powered cars, but they have lower maintenance costs that make them less expensive to run. EVs are exempt from any of Modo’s fuel surcharges, and it’s easy to estimate your costs with our Trip Calculator.
5. Unsafe in Adverse Weather
Believe EVs can't handle a storm? EVs are just as safe as gasoline cars in all weather conditions, including lightning storms. While EVs can experience some range reduction in winter due to cold temperatures, modern EVs are equipped with battery thermal management systems that enhance performance in cold weather. They also offer instant torque and smooth handling, providing reliable and enjoyable driving year-round. Additionally, EVs can precondition the cabin while still plugged in, ensuring a warm and comfortable start. These features ensure that EVs remain a sustainable and efficient driving option, regardless of the season.
6. No Variety of Models
Concerned you’ll have to settle for a boring car? The market for EVs is growing, offering a wide range of models to fit different needs, from compact cars to SUVs. With Modo’s growing fleet, there are a variety of EV models to choose from; Chevrolet Bolt, Hyundai Kona, Nissan Leaf, Kia Niro, Toyota bz4x and more. We suggest our members try a couple to explore the experience of driving a fully electric vehicle.
7. Limited Performance
Feel like EVs are sluggish? EVs provide instant torque, making them quick off the line and responsive, enhancing driving pleasure. They are great in the city and on the highway. Never driven one before? It is a seamless transition from a gas-powered vehicle.
8. Identifying Chargers is Complex
Confused about chargers? Here’s a quick guide: Level 2 chargers are most often located at home, workplaces, malls and community centres—they usually charge 30-40km of range per hour. Level 3 (DC Fast Chargers) are the fastest and are typically larger, adding up to 80% of your battery in about 30 minutes, and are typically located at highway stops and dedicated stations. Look for clear signage indicating the charger type and use apps like PlugShare or ChargePoint for real-time info.
As Modo progresses towards a fully electrified fleet, debunking myths and educating our community is crucial. Understanding the facts empowers you to make informed decisions and enjoy the benefits of our sustainable transportation options.
