Modo Achieves 50-30 Challenge Milestone - Fostering Diversity for a Better Future

What is the 50-30 Challenge, and why would Modo want to take it on?

At Modo, our success is measured by our Purpose: to connect people and places in ways that are affordable, convenient, inclusive and sustainable.

Every year, we evaluate ourselves on these metrics and seek out opportunities to further improve. These challenges can be rigorous, but we believe they are essential for the long-term health and effectiveness of the co-op.

When we learned about the 50-30 Challenge, we knew immediately that it was a fit for us. We firmly believe that a co-op serving its members should represent its members.

The 50-30 Challenge speaks to two aspirational goals.

  1. To have gender parity at our Board and senior leadership level.
  1. To ensure we have at least 30% representation from equity-seeking groups; this includes people of colour, members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, Indigenous people and people living with disabilities. This means meaningful representation at all leadership levels.

We are delighted to share that with this year’s leadership team, we have met the 50-30 Challenge.

Modo is the result of a diverse community; serving the Lower Mainland, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Victoria and Squamish. As a co-operative, we place explicit power in the hands of our members. We function democratically, governed by an elected Board of Directors, inviting regular engagement with members to get their views on new policies through discussion groups and surveys. We have been in business for 27 years through the inherent resilience granted to us by our people-powered co-operative structure. For Modo to effectively function as a transportation solution, we must understand the needs of the communities we serve. To best understand those needs, we welcome and strive to amplify diverse voices.

Our practices of inclusion are not only the right thing to do, but they make us better, smarter and more effective. Co-operatives are founded on the principle that people acting together can create transformative things. Our diverse leadership will support Modo as we move forward into scaling our impact – one shared car at a time.
