Canadian Co-op Week 2015
Canadian Co-op Week is happening this year from October 11 -17 and we feel it’s a perfect time to reflect on the seven Co-op Principles that have helped shape Modo. These guiding principles set the foundation for our vision, values and objectives.
1. Voluntary and Open membership
2. Democratic Member Control
3. Member Economic Participation
4. Autonomy and Independence
5. Education, Training and Information
6. Co-operation Among Co-operatives
7. Concern for Community
We live and breathe all seven of these principles at Modo — whether at work or at home!
The second principle, Democratic Member Control, is one of our strongest assets. We’re driven by people, not profit, and value hearing what our members have to say. Our Annual Member Survey is just one example of how we engage with our members. This year, we invited our members to help shape our Community Investments in the categories of Arts & Culture, Sustainable Transportation and LGBTQ organizations and events. The Eastside Culture Crawl, Bike to Work Week and Pride celebrations in Vancouver and Victoria were some events that members vocally supported and we’re excited to further develop our partnerships in these communities!
Vancity and Central 1 Credit Unions helped to pilot The Company Car
Co-operation Among Cooperatives (generally referred to as “Principle #6”), shines in our new Company Car program, which was created with two fellow co-ops — Central 1 Credit Union and Vancity. What started as an idea over coffee quickly became a reality and is now another option for local businesses to adopt carsharing as part of their transportation strategy. Having shared values and principles make collaboration not only much easier but also more beneficial to everyone.
At more than 13,000 members, Modo continues to grow across the Lower Mainland and Victoria, along with our fellow co-ops. To celebrate, we’ve got a special offer for co-op members across BC:
