My tip of the month: Balancing the kiddo and the carseat!

As a carsharing parent to a one-year-old, I’ve had to get creative about how I get the kiddo, the car seat and all the other kaboodle that kiddos need (well, “need”) from the house to the Modo and back again.

When there’s two of us, it’s a cinch. I just leave kiddo with his papa and I head down the block to pick up the car and bring it back to load up. When it’s just me, however, it’s not so straightforward. Sometimes, I put him in the carrier and sling the infant car seat over my back and just hoof it — however uncomfortably — to the car, then return to pick up our bags.

I’ve seen a few people with car seat adapters on their strollers, which allow them to put the car seat on wheels and the baby in the car seat. This seems ideal. I wish I had this setup. When the Modo we need is a bit further afield, we’ve put the car seat in the bike trailer and cycled to the car. You can either lock up the bikes and trailer nearby or throw them in the back, if it’s a minivan.

Once kiddo graduates to the next car seat, which will be within the next 4 months I think, all bets are off because these guys are beasts and not nearly so portable. Perhaps more seasoned carsharing parents will have tips for us!

Four Things All Carsharing Parents Should Know:

  • Carsharing with kiddos requires a bit extra time so pad your booking with at least 15 minutes longer than you think you’ll need. (Yep, Modo has 15-minute booking increments now!)
  • Book a car you’re familiar with if possible so you don’t feel like you’re starting from scratch; if that’s not possible, check the vehicle notes in your confirmation email for any new info before you arrive at the car
  • Bring wet wipes! Three words: Sticky little fingers.
  • Sometimes you’ll need to take advantage of Modo’s cleaning incentive which can get you some free drive time!
