Pro tip: Keep the dome light set to auto

When a member expressed concern about entering a darkened van, suggesting it be mandatory to leave the dome light set to auto before fobbing out, we asked other members via Twitter what they thought.

While we’re not ready to brand our vehicles, we do hope you’ll think of the next member to use the car and kindly set the dome light to automatically come on when the doors are open. Be careful, however, not to set the switch to “on”; otherwise, you may drain the battery.

“The only thing I’m concerned about is a light being left on and draining the battery,” says fleet director Doug Dunn. “I’d prefer members shut the light off all together if they’re unsure which position is ‘auto’.”

He notes that some vehicles’ auto setting may not extinguish the light until as many as 30-45 seconds after the door has been shut, while others will turn off immediately.
