Guest Post by Charmaine Niebergall: Carsharing with my N license
Modo member Charmaine found out in September 2016 that she could use Modo with an N license, bought a driving lesson package with Victoria Driving School, and got her N within a few months. As a new member, she shares her Modo Story with us in this guest post series!

At 30 years old, I still didn’t have my driver’s license. Why? Born and raised in Victoria, I had cheap and easy access to public transit. I wasn’t motivated to start driving due to all those costs (monthly car payments, insurance, gas, lessons, repairs and on it goes). It felt so out of reach as a young, single professional woman trying to get ahead. I was also admitedly a bit nervous. Driving was…well….scary! As I approached my 31st birthday, I felt I should really bite the bullet.
Stressed about how I could really manage the costs of being a driver, I googled “car share” to see what was available in Victoria. Modo popped up right away. And when I found out I could join with an N (novice) driver’s licence, well, that did it! I found a fabulous local driving school (Victoria Driving School), and after 3 months of lessons, I aced my driver’s test and got my N license. Three days after that, I was a new Modo member, fob in hand, and app on my phone—I felt like a new woman!
I now have the world at my fingertips! Pouring rain and need groceries? Go for a local Sunday hike on my own? Gotta do errands in an inconvenient part of town? Modo lets me do it all and at $8 per hour, gas and mileage included, it’s a small cost to pay for freedom and fun—and is also better for the environment than owning my own gas guzzler. What I hadn’t realized until joining was how well maintained the Modo cars are and how many were so close to where I live.
I have never been particulary interested in cars, but it feels pretty swanky to get to drive a lovely 2016 Honda Fit (with heated seats!), or a newer Hybrid (push start button!? Oh lala!), all just a few blocks away from my downtown Victoria apartment. I was Modo-vated, you might say, to take the leap and face my fears.
Thank you Modo for taking a chance on Victoria – I look forward to our fabulous future together! – Charmaine Niebergall
