There’s more to distracted driving than smartphones and texting
Last year, British Columbia more than doubled its fines for distracted driving violations and raised the associated penalty points applied to a driver’s record from three to four. These changes reflect an alarming trend on Canadian roadways with distracted driving fatalities having surpassed impaired driving fatalities in several jurisdictions.
What is distracted driving?
Texting while driving is still the most common cause of distraction among drivers. Two seconds is all it takes to double your risk of a collision. While texting, your eyes are off the road for an average of five seconds, increasing your risk of a crash by 23 times.
Other common distractions include:
- Using a GPS
- Changing music or radio stations
- Minding children
- Eating and drinking
- Putting on make-up and personal grooming
