Carsharing arrives on the Sunshine Coast with Coast Car Co-op
On March 1, the Sunshine Coast welcomes its first carsharing co-operative, offering members on both sides of Howe Sound access to an extended network of more than 350 vehicles.
Based in Gibsons, Coast Car Co-op has been working tirelessly to bring carsharing to the Sunshine Coast, with widespread support throughout the local community. On Saturday, CCC members, supporters and onlookers will gather for a community launch event at Gibsons Public Market in Lower Gibsons from 11-2pm.
The non-profit, member-owned carshare launches with 45 members and two vehicles – a 2013 Toyota Prius C (hybrid) and a new 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan – with plans to add more vehicles throughout 2014.
Modo’s own fleet stands at 307 as of writing, not including a new multi-passenger vehicle to be placed at Horseshoe Bay to coincide with the March 1 launch.
In relaunching Modo’s Horseshoe Bay vehicle, those living on the Sunshine Coast – and Vancouver Island – may now walk or bike onto the ferry and pick up Modo’s Horseshoe Bay vehicle for an easy, affordable trip to Vancouver, Squamish and beyond.
Likewise, Modo members can easily walk-on at Horseshoe Bay and pick up one of CCC’s carshare vehicles on the other side, for an affordable holiday excursion on the Coast! (Don’t forget, you can also do this in Nanaimo and Victoria as well!)
Modo has offered guidance and support to CCC’s founders along their journey to launching the new endeavour, and we’re thrilled to be part of the official launch. A delegation of Modo representatives will join the big event on Saturday, with an information booth to answer questions about the fleet and how Sunshine Coast carsharers can become member of Modo.
Congratulations, Coast Car Co-op! Welcome to the family!
